LIBRA AI Technologies was one of the five winning “5GLOGINNOV Open Call Innovative Start-Ups” announced at the ITS Future Champion Contest of 2021 ITS World Congress, in Hamburg, by the project coordinator, Dr Eusebiu Catana, ERTICO ITS Europe.

The 5GLOGINNOV partners organised the Open Call to select five innovative 5G-based solutions for deployment at the three Living Labs of the project. All the candidates were evaluated for their project's innovativeness and goals. For LIBRA AI, the competition was an excellent opportunity to advance further developed technologies and integrate them into a complete prototype.

The company's winning solution entitled: "Real timE drowSiness detectiON, AlerTing and rEporting (RESONATE)" is currently deployed in one of the project's Living Lab located at the port of Piraeus. It includes the development of an effective yet relatively low-cost Driver Drowsiness detection system targeting professional drivers and fleets. This system:

  • comprise an edge, GPU-enabled computing device equipped with a camera and 5G communication capabilities offering continuous robust drowsiness detection (including early drowsiness symptom detection), and it promptly warns the driver even in the absence of an internet connection;
  • benefits from a high-performing cloud-based ML-API service that will offer enhanced drowsiness detection, reducing false positives considerably;
  • is accompanied by an interactive data visualization and reporting business intelligence system that provides a 360o view of the whole fleet alertness performance;
  • is aimed to be driver agnostic and,
  • the whole architecture and approach can support future extensions of the system to detect driver states beyond drowsiness, such as distracted driver detection.

Talking about the LIBRA AI's motivation to join the 5GLOGINNOV Consortium and the expectations from its involvement in the project, the company's CEO and Co-founder, Yannis Kopsinis, mentioned, among others, the following:

"Our solution is a driver fatigue monitoring system which aims to automatically assess the level of alertness of an individual while driving a truck or heavy machinery in the terminal. A robust way to do so is via driver's face & eyes continuous monitoring, relying on the fact that the facial features differ between a fatigued and an alerted driver. This system is also accompanied by a business intelligence framework that allows to draw insights from the fleet behaviour and make informed decisions to improve safety significantly".

In the forthcoming months, LIBRA AI will benefit from its collaboration with PCT, a world-class container terminal operator owned by COSCO, and the rest of the 5GLOGINNOV partners in several ways. The most important is our data science team's access to valuable information and data in order to deploy and optimise the RESONATE solution, providing a close to market product for the transport and logistics sector.
