LIBRA AI Technologies is proud to participate in HIDDEN – Hybrid Intelligence for Advanced Collective Perception and Decision Making in Complex Urban Environments, a newly launched Horizon EU-funded project part of the CCAM Association that revolutionises connected and automated mobility (CCAM) across European cities.

As cities continue to grow and evolve, so must the systems that support safe and efficient mobility. HIDDEN is at the forefront of this transformation, aiming to bridge the gap between machine perception and human intuition in complex urban environments. By enhancing how automated vehicles detect and respond to real-world scenarios—such as occluded pedestrians or hidden cyclists, the project is working to make our streets smarter and safer.

Bringing together 15 partners from 7 countries, HIDDEN focuses on embedding hybrid intelligence, the fusion of AI and human feedback, into mobility systems. From detecting vulnerable road users in hidden zones to enabling explainable, ethical AV decisions, the project is building a more human-aware future for European transportation.

Smarter Streets, Safer Travel

HIDDEN tackles one of the biggest challenges in connected and automated mobility (CCAM): how to detect what can’t be seen, like a child stepping into the road from behind a parked car or a cyclist hidden from view. Urban areas are filled with unpredictable and complex scenarios. The goal of HIDDEN is to make these environments safer by improving how automated vehicles (AVs) perceive and make decisions using both artificial and human intelligence.

What HIDDEN Aims to Do

At the heart of the project is Hybrid Intelligence, blending machine learning with human judgment. The project’s key objectives include:

  • Designing and testing failsafe AI-based collective awareness systems, focusing on the detection of occluded objects, including VRUs, in complex urban settings.
  • Developing predictive decision-making agents that utilise collective awareness output and which are explainable and aligned with human driving styles and ethical principles.
  • Embedding human intelligence in both perception and decision-making layers, with strong attention to societal and ethical aspects. Engaging CCAM stakeholders and regulatory bodies across the EU and beyond, and promoting project outcomes toward standardisation efforts.

Four real-world use cases, such as children darting into traffic or workers obscured by vegetation, will guide the technology development and testing.

Our role in HIDDEN

LIBRA AI Technologies serves as the Technical Manager of the HIDDEN project, leading the coordination of technical work across all partners to ensure timely and high-quality results.

LIBRA’s contribution is an AI-powered system that tracks a driver's gaze and emotional state using two synchronised cameras, one on the road and one inside the cabin. This system identifies where the driver is looking, whether they’re tired or alert, and what they’re reacting to. These insights directly enhance the vehicle’s collective perception system, allowing it to better interpret and respond to complex driving scenarios.

LIBRA’s technology includes two components

  • Gaze Estimation & Object Detection: which tracks where the driver is looking and what they’re looking at.
  • Drowsiness & Emotion Detection, which monitors driver alertness and emotional state to improve safety.

By embedding this human feedback into AV systems, LIBRA will contribute to making automated decisions reflecting real-world human driving behaviour.

Kick-Off and What’s Next

The HIDDEN project officially launched in July 2025 with a vibrant two-day kick-off meeting in Athens, Greece, hosted by the project coordinator, the I-SENSE Group of ICCS-NTUA. LIBRA was prominently represented, with its team members networking with partner representatives and thoroughly presenting the gaze tracking system and contributing to the project’s strategic planning.

Looking ahead, HIDDEN will continue to develop, test and refine its innovations across multiple urban scenarios for the next 3 years, combining simulation and real-world trials.
